Some of my family and friends will say that books ruined me. My wife and I left the Mormon church with our four kids in tow last September. For years, I was told never to read religious materials unless they came straight from the church. Luckily, I have a wife with a PhD who took several classes in philosophy and is willing to learn outside the box. She is one of my heroes. Together, we began asking questions and reading everything we could get our hands on.
We were shocked at what we found.
We were living inside a bubble, unaware of how the church was manipulating us. If you’re interested in my story, I’ve just published an essay titled, A Blue Shirt in a Mormon Church which talks about my experience in the church and how brainwashing is still very much alive in modern society.

This is why I started The Read Well Podcast. I want to teach people to read well because in doing so, you might just learn something that could save your life.
Until next week, read slowly - take notes - apply the ideas.

How to Make the Best Coffee at Home by James Hoffmann
Alright, coffee friends, don't judge me. I'm new to this coffee thing since I left the Mormon church last September, so I'm trying to catch up. Here's what I know so far: coffee is great (unless it's not). Sometimes it's really bad. The more I've learned about it, the more I've fallen in love with it, and now I have an espresso machine in my reading room. It's quite the treat. This book is one of my new favorite books because it demystifies coffee, is beautifully written and photographed, and is the love project of Mr. Coffee himself, James Hoffmann. If you love waking up to the perfect cup like I've come to discover, this book is a must.
In this episode, I explore the six fundamental reasons why we read books. Reading goes beyond mere entertainment or passing the time. I’ll share how reading can optimize your life, make you more educated, expand your horizons, introduce you to interesting ideas, and help you gain control over your life. Join me to discover why every book you pick up can be a tool for personal growth and understanding.
Sometimes it's nice to have a quiet space full of friends who love to read. Our private reading community is a great way to attend live events, meet other readers, and learn new ideas.
Every day, I'm asked, "How do I read more books?" Many people want to read but feel like they can't sit for longer than a few minutes without checking on the phone, the kids, and the email. That's why I created the 30-Day Focused Reader Challenge.
